I'll add to that list of mythical city wide networks the much promoted (round here in Milton Keynes anyway) Milton Keynes free city wide wireless network which was apparently live 01 August 2006 but doesn't exist outside of press releases like this one from ZDNet

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/0,1000000085,39271297,00.htm

Doesn't exist as far as I can work out as a resident of MK who's tried to find it with my laptop, the network guys at the Open University and my housemate who works in the town centre internet caff.

regards
Mark

Hey,

That 'boat' is still in the dock..and the only reality for metropolitan
networks is a perpetuation of lame assertions and ham fisted inaction..
just a distraction from the passive freenetwork infrastructure work most
needed. Manchesterwireless has so much to offer (not least some top
notch engineers on hand) and so little to lose by following through on
even the simplest public network proposal...

Last I visited it was going to be a red, yellow, pink brick-zion core and
a consolidation of effort at Urbis for town centre impact.. so did you
all get a job or something?

Norwich local authority boasted a mesh wireless network in May which is
still non existent

"The one thing we don't want to do is compete with commercial
companies," said Mr Adams.
Sure you don't.. cos

Before then it was Westminster (one of the many wishful thinkers)
http://www.newswireless.net/index.cfm/article/2256 (ha ha ha)

and Cardiff posed for cameras in 2002..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/2251565.stm - whooh we have 50 users

"all dead yet still alive" a figment of their imaginations

so to be specific NO you didn't miss the boat.. there isn't one,

get on with it then....

easy
