i'm alive, though like most other people work is a bit of a nightmare at
the moment. rob is off studying in edinburgh, his manchesterwireless.net
email address should work now though it was broken for a while. if it
doesn't, i can send it to anyone off-list
unfortunately (or fortunately depending how you look), the world of £15
a month adsl has pretty much killed off a wifi network in manchester,
since adsl is on the whole far superior to what wireless can currently
provide. without the groundswell of need for cheap reliable broadband,
the rest of the stuff like open access points, community hosting, etc,
really can't survive.
hopefully with wimax coming along at a rapid pace within a year or 18
months there will be wireless access across the city at 5.8Ghz (the
frequency currently used for stuff like tv outside broadcasts), but
it'll be licenced and managed so unless someone can convince the council
to fund it, you'll be paying your normal isp type rates to a company
like www.libera.co.uk
I've seen eastserve has gotten more funding for wireless in east
manchester for anyone who lives over that way, you can visit them at
www.eastserve.com
